Transcript for: Living in two different countries, in two different homes
Interviewee: Karam Hussain
Subject: Home
What was it like having two homes, in different countries? To be honest, it was good. It increases your life. When you’re at your other home, obviously it will be different there, so I really enjoyed having both houses.
What was it like when you came to live here permanently?
It was a difficult time. The last time I came back, I remember it was December 1980, and it’s been a ling time since. And then in 1981 my wife came, and I started to grow a family. I could hardly afford to come back every year. After ’80, I went in ’85, because my brother had a stroke, then I went with my Uncle. So, I used to go a stay years over there, but now if I go I stay a month or three weeks, that’s the difference. Because I’ve got a lot of responsibility.
Was it your own choice to bring your family up here? How come you didn’t decide to bring them up like you were brought up?
Actually, that was my choice, because – I think that was a brave decision – if my family were there, it would be a difficulty for me and my family. If you look at when the parent doesn’t have any link or communication with their children then they suffer, both parent and children. So I think that it was a brave decision that my wife came over.
