Subject: Buying a house in Huddersfield
I was born in Huddersfield, back then it was St. Lukes hospital in Crosland Moor. When did your parents come to Huddersfield?
My dad came over in the late 60's, I think it was 1969 or even 1970, and my mum came over about a year before I was born, either 1970 or 1971.
Can you remember what your dad did when he first came?
My dad was pretty young when he came over; I think he must have been in his late teens, so I know that he was staying with some relatives over in Leicester at first. I think he just enjoyed life for the first two years, getting to know the pubs and this and that at first, but after that I think he was working in a factory in Leicester. My mum came over after they got married: he went back to India, got married and then my mum came over and they lived in Leicester where they had my older brother. He was about a year and a half old when they moved to Huddersfield.
Do you know why they moved to Huddersfield?
It was because they had a lot of relatives in Leicester, so they were staying with relatives so that they could save up the money to buy a house- and back then I think you could get a house for around £500 plus my mum wasn't keen on living with relatives because everybody knew your business, so they moved away from that and came to Huddersfield.
