Subject: Growing up in Huddersfield

We lived on St. Stevens Terrace which has now been demolished and some new flats have been put there. There were mainly Asian families living there although there were some English families living there as well. We used to gather in the street and play games in the street. Batman used to be on, and that used to be our favourite program, and also superman comics; they were our favourite comics. There used to be a Salvation Army hut just nearby there, which has now been bought out and is now a mosque. We used to go to the Salvation Army hut in the evenings, and we used to enjoy playing games there, because they used to have all sorts of activities going on. Basically, there were mixed people there, people from English homes and people from Asian homes, and we got on quite well there. We used to enjoy that, because it was kind of a pastime. People were quite friendly, actually. Occasionally I would go to the house of one of my English friends, and her mother would offer tea and biscuits, quite enjoyably, quite nice actually. I didn't experience any negativity at that time.
