Karam Hussain
Cllr Karam Hussain born in July 1956, became the second South Asian Mayor of Huddersfield in 2008. He came to Huddersfield at the age of 15 and has lived here ever since. Karam was shocked by the notion that he had to work in the textile mills when he first came in 1971 as he initially came to England to study, but worked with his father as this was his only option. Karam for many years lived in between homes, six months in England and six months in Kashmir as his grandfather didn't apporove of him working. Karam finally settled in England when he married and now has four children and five grandchildren who all live nearby.
Karam is pround of achieving the role of Mayor and now continues his work as Councillor for the Liberal Democrats in West Yorkshire. He also speaks several languages which include English, Urdu, Punjabi and his mother tongue Phahri Patwari.
