Jamil Akhtar
Jamil came to England in 1962 to further his studies. After his mothers' passing, he came to England leaving behind his father and siblings. Jamil had no family in Huddersfield and with the intention that he would go back in a few years, Jamil settled in Huddersfield and acheived prominent roles within the community. Amongst many of his achievments, Jamil undertook the role of magistrate on the Huddersfield bench for 23 years, was the first Asian Labour Councillor in Huddersfield holding that role for 12 years and has also been governer for three schools in the Newsome area . He now works with various organisations and in 2008 achieved an MBE from the Queen.
